4 Simple Ingredients to Replace All of Your Household Cleaners

    by Kelly Marra

Spring cleaning is always a big deal in my house.  It’s the one time of the year when I feel compelled to dust, mop, wipe down, disinfect and vacuum every square in of my living space all at once.  There’s no point to all of that hard work when I’m just spreading toxic chemicals around the house with my cleaning supplies, though. That’s where the simple knowledge of  just a few ingredients you already have floating around your home can save your body and pocketbook unnecessary harassment.

    The Four Friends

A few years ago, I did some spring cleaning on my cleaning products.  I tossed all of my commercial cleaners and decided to make my own.  Since then, I’ve been cleaning the natural and green way, using ingredients that my great-grandma would have used to clean her house.

I’ve got four go-to ingredients: vinegar, baking soda, lemons and salt.  In this post, I’ll tell you all about vinegar and baking soda.  Check out Part I to learn how to use lemons and salt, and there’ll be no need to buy any commercial cleaners ever again!

Vinegar, in my opinion, is ultimate household green cleaner.  It’s cheap to buy and can be used to clean pretty much anything.  It kills germs, making it good for cleaning the kitchen and bathroom, and can neutralize acid and protein based stains, making it an excellent addition to laundry.

Baking soda is the ingredient I reach for the most after vinegar.  It’s also cheap to buy in bulk (I bought a 12 pound bag 5 years ago that I’m still working on!) and is a great abrasive scrub.  It neutralizes odors, can remove stains and is great addition to personal care products.

    All Purpose Cleaner:

1 spray bottle filled with 50% white vinegar and 50% water.  This is my ultimate go-to cleaner.  I use it on EVERYTHING, from toilet seats to counter top, from windows to carpet stains.  Simply mix the 50/50 solution and shake the bottle gently.  The vinegar will kill germs and leave a streak-free shine to glass and mirrors.

    Odor Eliminator:

Do you have pets (or kids) that have left strong odors in inappropriate places?  Try this: 2 Cups white vinegar, 1 Cup water and 1 Cup baking soda.  Mix together the vinegar and water and use a sponge or paper towel to apply it heavily to the affected area.  Let it sit for a few minutes before blotting the area with a paper towel.  Cover the area with baking soda and let the baking soda sit until it’s dry to the touch.  Simply vacuum the baking soda up and voila, odor eliminated!  This works great on any carpet stains too!

    Toilet Bowl Cleaner:

1 Cup white vinegar, ½ Cup baking soda.  Pour white vinegar into toilet bowls and let sit for 1 hour.  Dip a toilet brush into the bowl and then sprinkle with the baking soda.  Scrub the toilet as usual.
